Fate Gave the Word ~ White Swan is Coming!

"Fate gave the word, the arrow sped, and pierced my darling's heart….and with him all the joys have fled
life can to me impart…"

"White Swan" Is on the Way!

Dear Friends,

I'm thrilled to be working on our new album even as I write, tentatively titled "White Swan." Below are some notes on the production that will give you an idea of what's coming. I hope you'll read and be intrigued!

Stories of tragedy and transcendence ~ the overpowering confrontation with one's destiny ~ the sweet pathos in losing love and growing older ~ this is the human condition that gave rise to the urge to create folk songs from the earliest ages of human history.

This is the most truly collaborative work I've ever released. The fine players of the Hilonesome Band and I have created these songs together and on this album you hear their voices alongside my own.

The band was just absolutely amazing in the studio. I felt so thrillingly happy as I stood in the vocal booth and sang and played the songs we’ve perfected over the last year and a half. I looked around to see if anybody was just noticing how great everything sounded!

Excitingly, we developed Ernest Troost’s “Harlan County Boys” at the last minute when we realized we needed another song to fill out the album. Luckily, Steve and Rob and I had worked on the song in late July and had a great arrangement all ready with a demo to practice with and charts. So we got that song together in just a couple of hours and to me that is the mark of a great band, the ability to pull out a great performance in a short time because of technical skill and collaborative bonding. I’m so excited by the outcome. I think this song of Ernest’s is, like all his work, profound, poetic and beautiful.

This album is a real milestone for our band, marking an evolution that has had a long coming of age. Our growth and evolution has made me look back to sum up this now almost ten year journey. We've come a long way from the early years of our band's inception. Our first album "Blue Eyed Darlin'" released in 2005 introduced us to the world via the songwriting of our lead guitarist, Rob Carlson. We reached for the sounds of bluegrass because it was the music we loved ~ we were drawn to the stories, the romance, the warnings, the humor and the tragedies. With the introduction of new evocative writing by Rob, integrating historical elements along with new and deeper complexity in music, our sound has made a most interestingly subtle shift: we've cast a wider net to find a sound unlike anything we've done before. What is here is a true melting pot of influences that move us, from bluegrass to country to Celtic to Appalachia, and we've found our true home in this, our new, unique sound.

Lead guitarist Rob Carlson's original songwriting is again a main focus of this album with four new songs, and some of the most sophisticated folk music on the scene today. Songs of tragedy at the hands of violence and mistaken identity, as well as lighthearted musings on love and growing older make up an eclectic and tunefully lovely mix. Also featured are songs from two other Los Angeles songwriters: Ernest Troost's great "Evangeline," and "Harlan County Boy," and Fur Dixon in collaboration with Rob on "Little Rabbit." As on earlier albums, the work of the great Jean Ritchie is present, with the profoundly moving "The Soldier." Fred Sanders makes his songwriting debut with the Hilonesome Band on his original song of family, "Rockin' in Your Grand Daddys' Chair," and Steve Rankin is the fine and expressive lead on Steve Earle's poetic "Me and the Eagle." James Taylor's great anthem "Mill Worker" opens the album as a tribute to all working women everywhere. Also included is a recording originally appearing on Susie's "Singin' The Moon Up" Jean Ritchie tribute, the great "Lord Thomas and Fair Ellender (here as "Fair Ellender"), one of the most well-known of the original "Child Ballads" developed by Ritchie. Susie on the haunting lead vocal is joined by Ritchie sons Peter and Jon Pickow, and famed East coast fiddler, Kenny Kosek.

We are indebted once again to our fine friend and collaborator Rick Cunha who has done a masterful job of engineering for this record. Rick has been working with us and for us since the early days of the Eight Hand String Band in 2000 for their record “Simple Truth.” He’s since engineered our albums “Home On the Hill,” “Blue Eyed Darlin’”, “Green Kentucky Blues” and also handled file transcription and mastering on our live stage soundtrack of “Singin’ The Moon Up: the Voice of Jean Ritchie.” We love Rick and love working with him at his cozy and beautiful studio, the Rainbow Garage in Los Angeles.

Below is our upcoming show schedule through this year ~ we are especially gratified with the FolkScene broadcast coming up on October 28th. Tune in online at KPFK's Streaming Online and stream the show from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. We're also looking forward to welcoming our friends Houston Jones to Southern California during the first part of November for two shows with us. Check that out below and make plans to join us and hear this very fine and rocking Northern California band! These should be two really awesome shows!

Until next time, please visit us on Our Facebook Page and Our Home Website. Come on out to a show, bring friends and come say hey!

Hot, Hot, Hot! August News!

August 3, 2012

Dear Friends,

The band and I had been planning for a rather slow July until the phone rang one wonderful afternoon in late June and it was McCabe's Guitar Shop offering us a show there on July 15. We excitedly kicked into high gear and ended up with a sell-out crowd and one of the finest nights we've ever had on stage. It was great to reconnect with a lot of our Los Angeles friends who hadn't seen the band in awhile and show them our new stuff! Big thanks go to Wayne Griffiths in the sound booth for giving us the best sound support we've ever had, and Lincoln Myerson at McCabe's for inviting us to play. It was an awesome night! Here are some photos from Cam Sanders Photography, and videos are on the way. We were asked back on the spot and will premier our new CD "White Swan" at a CD release concert there in March 2013.

Mark Indictor
Some audience comments:

"I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed the show, your sets, your selections and the SOUND! I came for the Sound and you guys and the mixer did not disappoint. Your voice and the band, not[e] for note, just rang effortlessly thru that hall. Everyone member of your crew had many moments to shine, but I always leave your shows with your voice in my ear. What a room. Your warmth and the room are a distinct match."

"...It was awesome. And what a great crowd you had. The place was packed...Again, what a great show. You were great and the band was just wonderful."

Lisa Burns
We have an amazing August coming up: first we welcome the great Lisa Burns on bass to our ensemble for a Northern California mini-tour the second weekend as we return to a favorite, the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival in Tres Pinos, California near San Jose. Later in the month we return to Brad Colerick's fine songwriter series at the Firefly in South Pasadena and that weekend the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena. We're also starting on (drumroll!) at last! our NEW ALBUM "White Swan" working again with our dear friend Rick Cunha as engineer. We're all looking forward to returning to the beautiful and comfy Rainbow Garage here in Los Angeles.

We also get to stop in to record a show for Roz Larman's Folk Scene on KPFK here in Los Angeles mid-month. We'll keep you posted about when the show will be broadcast and available for online listening.

Until next month, please visit us on Our Facebook Page and Our Website! Come on out to a show and bring your friends! We all send you love and blessings,

Dear Friends,

We welcome new friends to this newsletter, and we hope you're having a great summer so far.  Ours is off to a terrific start ~ as I write today the band and I are still flying high from a wonderful time at the Father's Day Festival in Grass Valley.  We send big thanks to everyone at the California Bluegrass Association for a great festival experience and especially to Dave Gooding for the booking, Lisa Burns for loaning us her wonderful bass, Joe Weed for filming us, Mike Melnyk for the incredible photography, Bill Evans for sitting in, KVMR's Evangeline Elston and Eric Rice for the radio interview and live on the air mini-set, and Brian Walker for the great sound support.  This is festival done right, folks!

We're moving on into the summer with a short break in performing.  Family vacations and album prep work will take up the month.  We have great shows lined up in August, including a return to Roz Larman's Folk Scene on KPFK here in Los Angeles.  We'll keep you posted about when the show will be broadcast and available for online listening.

We should also have on the way some nice video from Grass Valley thanks to Joe Weed at Highland Studios.  Stay tuned for that as well.

And the biggest thing on tap for us is the recording of the new album, at last!  We're really excited to put down these new songs we've been playing out now for over a year.  We'll be debuting our new songs as well as our versions of Ernest Troost's "Evangeline" and James Taylor's "Mill Worker" along with Jean Ritchie's beautiful ballad, "The Soldier," and other surprises.

Until next month, please visit us On Facebook and Our Website.  And until we see you, happy summer!

February Shows and News

"Evangeline" is Ernest Troost's song about mistaken identity, crime and heartbreak.

Hey Friends!

February finds the band traveling a lot, running to and fro! We've spent the last month developing our show for the tours coming up and we're excited to be polishing our current work while working on some great new songs from Rob Carlson, Ernest Troost and Tom Waits.

Our first show of the new year is here in town with our good friend Ernest Troost at his “Juke Joint Gang” songwriter’s show at the Talking Stick in Venice. We then hightail it out of town to join the great band Houston Jones at the lovely Palms Playhouse in Winters, California (with a special surprise guest!). We toodle on down the road later that weekend to join the San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival (http://www.sfbluegrass.org/) for their first weekend of what looks like a great line up this year. Concerts at Studio 55 Marin and The Freight and Salvage are our part of this festival of concerts over a 10 day period throughout San Francisco area. We share the stage with some remarkable musicians for those shows, including the wonderful Kathy Kallick band at the Freight & Salvage. AND, excitingly, our show at the Freight will be streamed live over a webcast to anyone who would like to sign on! Wherever you are in the world, you can tune in! Purchase online tickets for $3 any time the day of the show at www.concertwindow.com/thefreight. The show will not be taped, but you can watch it live in HD. Payment can be made using PayPal or a credit/debit cards.

We're excited also to be attending the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis this month where we showcase with some of the greatest in the business. Check out the Folk Alliance at http://www.folk.org/.

Thanks to our friend Pattie Van Over on the camera and our own Mark Indictor as editor, we have five brand new videos on our YouTube channel from our show in December at the Grand Annex with Fur Dixon and Steve Werner. Happy New Year From the Hilonesome Band

"It is the time so well we love,
The time of all the year;
When winter calls with chilling breath,
For fireside and good cheer."

From Jean Ritchie's Winter Grace

Happy New Year!

Wow, isn't it weird to write "2012" and have it actually be a number of a year that we're living in? Having been raised in the '60s and '70s (I'm dating myself here) this kind of over the 2000 mark year is a little unbelievable!

But here we are! The Los Angeles weather has been spring-like and even though the days are short and the sun is low in the sky, we've been enjoying the early winter blue skies. We've also revved up the machine once again from our holiday hiatus and hibernation and are now busy planning for the upcoming year. There are some exciting things going on! We begin the year with the trio playing at the NAMM music industry convention in Anaheim for our friends at Shubb Capos. The rest of January will be a wood-shedding month as we prepare new songs and polish the act for a busy wintertime. February will find us returning to Ernest Troost’s “Juke Joint Gang” songwriter’s show at the Talking Stick in Venice and on the bill once again at the San Francisco Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, this time sharing the stage at the Freight & Salvage with the wonderful Kathy Kallick band as well as sharing a bill at the Palms Playhouse and Studio 55 Marin earlier that weekend with Houston Jones. Later that month we scurry off to Memphis for the International Folk Alliance Conference and some site seeing to Graceland and awesome barbeque! I can't wait to see the ducks at the famous Peabody hotel and visit Sun Records!

Other great things coming for 2012 include a possible short tour for me and Steve to the UK in April (we're working on it!), as well as a new band album we'll record this summer. We'll be presenting 4 new songs from Rob Carlson, along with works from Ernest Troost, Steve Earle, James Taylor and Jean Ritchie. And for those of you who've been waiting patiently, we're finally going to record Fred's great song "Rockin' In Your Grand Daddy's Chair" along with other surprises. We hope for a new CD release right around this time next year.

Thanks to our friend Pattie Van Over on the camera and our own Mark Indictor as editor, we have five brand new videos on our YouTube channel from our show in December at the Grand Annex with Fur Dixon and Steve Werner. See them at www.youtube.com/susieglaze And also check out a very cool article published in late December in Pasadena's The Rose Magazine written by our friend Michelle Mills called "Fiddling Around in Space" about Mark. Find it here:  Rose Magazine Article

And if you didn't catch it, our friend Carl Gage did a great review of our last release "Live At The Freight & Salvage" in No Depression in September: Check it out at No Depression Review of "Live" CD by Carl Gage

So please stay tuned for more good news! Make sure you visit our website, drop us a line on Facebook, and plan to come see us at a show.

We send you all love, and best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year. To that end I'd like to quote Mark's New Year prayer: "May we all know the joys and sorrows of all living things as our own, and may our 2012 be filled with love, kindness, compassion, health, abundance, peace and blessings. Amen."

I couldn't say it any better.
